Imagine a 7-year-old boy from Bihar who dreams of representing the Indian National Football Team.  But there is no local club. There is no local academy in his city, or even in his entire state. His football career has ended before he even dared to dream. This is a national issue in India, and I have lived it. When I was 7 years old, I lived in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. I loved football so much that I eagerly signed up for the inter-house football team to represent the Yellow House (if you went to an Indian school with Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow houses, you know exactly what I mean!). But I remember there was no one to teach us the basic technicalities—how to properly pass, how to dribble, or how to actually play the game. You and your friends are hyped to play football… but no field exists nearby! I remember when I was 14, living inside an Indian Air Force campus. I would always play football with friends who studied in the KV (Kendriya Vidyalaya).  We played on a muddy pitch that actually existed back then. The ground was very uneven, but we still loved every minute we spent playing there. I am turning 23 now. Since my father retired, we had to move out, but we still live just opposite the campus. Recently, a friend and I went back inside just to hang out and walk around. As we passed by a certain area, we saw that the very pitch where we once played had been excavated.  Upon inquiring, we found out that the camp commander and top authorities had decided to build a living complex for the airmen. There is nothing wrong with building a housing complex, but why kill a football pitch? Now, this whole campus consists of one basketball court, one volleyball court, and one indoor badminton court....

Imagine you are 22 years old right now, and by the time you turn 91, India still hasn't qualified for a FIFA World Cup. Like a leap year, it happens once every four years: we see a massive wave of new fans who start following the FIFA World Cup. And while watching the tournament, they inevitably ask a very genuine question: “Why isn't India playing?” or “When will India finally qualify for the World Cup?” I honestly love this concern—especially coming from people who are completely missing in action when it comes to actually supporting and following the Indian national football team year-round. But for a person like me, who has followed Indian football religiously for the last seven years, I can tell you one thing for sure: we are never going to make it. Not anytime soon. A national team is the absolute peak of the entire footballing ecosystem. It sits on a throne above the clubs, the leagues, the grassroots, the federation, and the youth setups. What if your child trained hard for years… but only played 8 matches a year?   I have always been a big anime fan. I have watched anime like Demon Slayer, Black Clover, Naruto, One Piece, etc. But there was one anime which is very close to me. It is not as big as the above anime, but I love it because it is the story of a boy who lives in the remotest of areas, how he is scouted from his school match, and is brought to Esperion, who are playing in the J1 league.   The story is more or less about the academy journey of a child who joined through trials—his journey from the C team to the B team to the A team, and then finally achieving his dream to become a professional footballer.
